Why don’t cars just show error codes on the display?

Most people wouldn’t know what to do with the info anyway. Some can’t even figure out basic warning lights.

True, but it’d be useful for those who actually want to know what’s going on.

If you really want this, you could install an aftermarket head unit with OBD integration. I had a WRX and added a Kenwood touchscreen with an iDatalink module that showed codes and let me clear them.

That’s a great option. Thanks for sharing.

Codes don’t tell you exactly what’s wrong. They just point to a system that has an issue. A lot of people don’t realize that and just throw parts at the problem.

I get that. I just think it would be easier if people could access the codes without needing a separate tool, especially when they ask for help online.

Car manufacturers don’t want to make it easy. They’d rather you take it to the dealership and pay for diagnostics.

That’s definitely part of it.

Just buy a scanner. They’re cheap and easy to use.

Big trucks already have built-in diagnostics, but most cars are more about keeping things simple for the average driver.

Harleys can read and clear their own codes through the odometer display. Would be nice if cars had something similar.
