Can someone explain why the Toyota Land Cruiser is considered so good? I always hear about its reliability. It seems like the diesel and petrol engines can run for hundreds of thousands of miles, and I’ve heard they don’t rust much either. Any long-term owners or someone with knowledge care to explain?
They’re built to last 25 years or more with minimal issues.

True, though no car is perfect. Toyota had issues too—like head gasket problems with some engines or oil consumption. But the Land Cruiser’s reputation is well earned for the most part.

Agreed, but the first-gen 1UZ engine is pretty much flawless.

The short service intervals for rod bearings are debated, but once you change them, they’re usually fine for the long term.

For every story like that, there’s one about someone who assumed they didn’t need to change them and ended up with a ruined engine.

Not perfect, but Toyota is generally more reliable than most brands. Though, I do think they’re not the best looking.

To be more specific, it’s built to last longer than most owners.
They’re designed to last 25 years in countries with poor infrastructure.

Exactly. Toyota is already known for durability, but the Land Cruiser is built to an even higher standard. My parents’ HDJ80 reached 800,000 km with no major issues.
They do have problems, but not like American cars of the same age or mileage. They cared about reliability and quality. No car is perfect, but you won’t hear about Land Cruiser engines or transmissions needing major repairs as often.
Front, rear, and center lockers, leaf springs, and simple, overbuilt engines.

Not all of them have lockers.

Good point, I was thinking of specific models.
Oh, they definitely still rust.

Just use rust reformer generously.

Toyota’s manufacturing is top-notch. They only use proven technology, which makes their cars seem plain compared to others, but that’s why they last so long. The Land Cruiser is built to last 25 years, unlike most cars, which are designed for about 10.

The Land Cruiser was built in Japan, by people who took pride in their work. Toyota also pioneered quality control on the assembly line. They built the Cruiser with simplicity and proven components, which is why they’re so reliable.

Thanks for the detailed explanation!
