2002 corolla s acting weird, anyone seen this before?

hey guys, so i’ve got a 2002 toyota corolla s and it’s acting up. every time i shift into reverse or drive, it jumps pretty hard. it also vibrates when i’m stopped at a light or whatever. once i start moving, it’s fine though. no check engine light or anything. anyone know what might be going on?

mine did that too. turned out to be a bad motor mount. when the mount wears out, you get those hard jerks and shakes.

what’s a motor mount exactly? sorry, not super car savvy lol

no worries. it’s the part that holds your engine in place. when it gets old or cracks, the engine moves too much and causes jerking.

could also be the transmission mount. had a similar issue and it wasn’t the engine mount, but the trans one.

trans mount? is that different from the motor mount?

yeah, it holds the transmission in place. both can cause vibrations if they go bad.

no CEL means it’s probably not a sensor or something electronic. mechanical stuff like mounts makes sense.

yeah that’s what i was thinking too. was hoping it’d throw a code but nope.

my car did the same when the idle was too low. check your idle speed maybe?

what’s the idle supposed to be on these cars?

around 700-800 rpm in park, i think. if it’s way lower, it can shake and feel rough.

might also want to check your vacuum lines. a leak can mess with idle and cause shaky stops.

how do i check for a vacuum leak?

spray a little carb cleaner around the hoses while the engine’s running. if the idle changes, you found a leak.
