Glad to be part of this community! I’m driving a 2010 5-speed manual hatchback Yaris. Over the last two weeks, I’ve noticed a slight whining sound during acceleration. It doesn’t seem tied to any specific speed—it happens sometimes when I shift from 2nd to 3rd or from 3rd to 4th, but it goes away once I’m in gear. I’ve never heard it in 1st or 5th gear. It’s not very loud, and sometimes I don’t notice it when I’m on the interstate or have the radio on, but it’s there when I’m in traffic with no music.
So far, I haven’t had any issues with shifting, driving, or steering. Does anyone have any thoughts on what could be causing this? Where should I start looking? Thanks, everyone—happy to be here!
I have a 2010 with a 6-speed manual, and I’ve noticed a grinding noise when shifting from 2nd to 3rd, especially when it’s cold. I think it might be a synchro gear issue, but the sound hasn’t gotten worse over time.
I changed the transmission oil, and the clutch is fine—gears engage as they should. Opening up the gearbox for a diagnostic is expensive, so I’ve decided to wait until the clutch eventually needs replacing. The noise hasn’t affected the car’s performance, so I’ve stopped worrying about it.
