2016 Lexus GX Appreciation Post

I bought my 2016 Lexus GX new back towards the end of 2015 and it’s hard to believe I’ve had the car for almost 10 years now. It doesn’t have any fancy features like parking sensors or seat warmers, just the good ole rear view cameras, but after ~180k miles it’s been so reliable to me and I’ve made so many great memories in the car. As my family has grown, so has the role of my Lexus in the family.

A couple of months ago I was deciding between buying a more exciting car or spending ~5k for new tires, brake pads, windshield, coolant leak, and some regular maintenance. After talking about it with my friends and family for weeks like I was debating giving up my firstborn, I decided to spend the money getting the GX fixed.

Lexus forever! (Or at least another 180k miles!) This is partly an appreciation post, but also because I’m trying to keep mine forever, I’m curious who here has had their daily driver Lexus the longest?

If you had replaced it then what were you going to get?

It would be a big change, I was considering either a used Porsche 911 or BMW M5. It has to be an exciting enough car to get me to give up the GX.

@Patton
If you ever decide to get any of those cars, extended warranty should be the first thing you consider unless you have so much money you don’t care. I have a friend who bought a 2019 M5 last year and he has already spent $21,000 for repairs. They are very fun cars but they also cause you headaches.

@Frey
I definitely don’t have that kind of ‘don’t care’ money but I would probably splurge for a new enough car with less than 20k miles, hoping that as long as I keep up with regular maintenance and take care of the car, it doesn’t have any major issues.

So the MPG don’t bother you much eh? Done any off-roading?

windshield

what’s wrong? So you got the valley plate coolant leak?

The MPG sucks, not gonna lie haha especially because my commute is 25 miles each way every day.

I haven’t done any off-roading; she’s definitely a road princess, but after 180k miles, you accumulate a few cracks & chips that eventually make you nervous enough to invest in a new windshield.

Not sure if it was the valley plate; I didn’t think to ask honestly, but it was about $2k to fix, so definitely not cheap!

Have you ever had the valley plate leak? I’m also the owner of a 2016 with 90k miles; no valley plate leak yet thankfully, but I’ve heard of most owners running into that problem.

I’ve never heard of that, but with a quick Google search, I can see it has to do with a coolant leak? That may have been what it was for me, but I’m not sure; I didn’t ask too many details. It wasn’t cheap to fix though; cost about ~$2k. Hope that helps!

Yep, that’s the infamous Toyota V8 coolant leak. I guess you’re not in r/LexusGX or you’d have long heard of it.

Anything I could have done to prevent it?
