2017 Highlander Limited Transmission Issues

Up until a week ago, I didn’t know about the transmission problems with the 2017-2018 Highlanders. I never received the Toyota letter back in the day, at least not that I recall.

My 2017 has been a champ so far, with 98k miles. Purchased in October 2017.

There have been no transmission problems (except for a pressure release valve that wore out), no engine light activation, whining, skipping, or grinding—until now.

Issue:

Three days ago, my check engine light (CEL) came on. No other symptoms.

Took it to my local shop for a scan, and it threw the following codes:

  • S0740-7E
  • S2713-7F
  • P2756-7F

Started researching across forums (including Reddit) and discovered many 2017-2018 Highlanders have transmission issues. However, up until now, mine had been fine.

I found the Toyota North America Customer Support Notice ZJC, and it appears that my Highlander falls under the covered criteria.

Main Questions:

  1. How responsive are dealers in handling these transmission problems?
  2. Since Toyota North America reimburses the cost, should I expect much pushback?
  3. Has anyone faced delays, lack of available transmissions, or long wait times?

Would appreciate any insights from those who have been through this process.

Yes, getting the check engine light (CEL) is part of the issue. And yes, transmissions are on galactic backorder. Been dealing with 2-3 month wait times at the dealer. You should be very happy if your VIN is covered. The issue actually spans 2017-2022 models.

I clearly haven’t been paying attention because I missed that the 2018 models also have transmission issues. Mine has 55k miles and does have some noticeable transmission clunks and lags. Maybe not related?

Sounds like getting a check engine light (CEL) is part of the issue?
