2021 Avalon Nightshade

Hey guyxz
I am planning on buying the 2021 Avalon Nightshade from a friend of mine as an upgrade for my '15 Camry.

Been told fuel economy is not the greatest which is expected for a V6, but I wonder if there are any common issues I should be aware of. My Camry has almost 150k miles with no issue, so I do expect the same with the Avalon.

The Avalon has about 55k miles. Any insights would help!

Thank you!

I went from a 4 cylinder Solara to the Avalon XLE and the fuel economy is pretty much the same. I keep it in eco mode most of the time, but it can still hit speed and pass easily when I need to.

I have a '14 XLE Touring and actually average 1-2 mpg better in sport mode, funnily enough.

@Ellison
Yeah I have a '17 Avalon XLE and I get better mpg in sport mode; seems like eco mode doesn’t do much.

I have the Limited and around the same mileage… I’m getting around 25 mpg in sport.

Check the sunroof seals; I’m not sure if that model has one, but a water hose or car wash will tell you how bad it is if at all.

Check for inside water or fog in the front and back lights. That entire assembly has to be replaced and is $$.

Engine-wise, you have plenty of pull still at 55k miles.

@Baer
Appreciate the tips!

I used to average 25.8 MPG on my V6 '22 Touring, but bumped it up to 26.2 in the last month. The radar cruise control for highway driving is awesome. My usual 60-mile daily commute averages 32.5 MPG now. Just remember to cancel on exit turns!

I get between 31 and 35 mpg on my '21 Touring. The only problems I’ve had are rattles coming from the small plastic pieces behind the door handles, and the console lid doesn’t close tight so there’s a bit of play. These are obviously very minor. Overall, it’s an awesome car.

@Taran
Awesome - thank you so much!

I get 32 MPG highway consistently. 301 HP and pulling that sort of mileage? That’s amazing.

32 mpg highway is awesome. I get 32-36 on my Camry haha and it’s a 4 cyl.

I just got the XSE Nightshade 2019, posted on my page! It’s a great car and looks fantastic. Haven’t noticed any problems at all; 55k is super nice! I got mine at 70k. I got the hybrid, and it makes almost 40 mpg. That’s great, man! Hope you love it.

@Quin
Love to hear it. Thank you for sharing!

It was a nice car for sure, but I was shocked how EVERYTHING was more expensive - tires, insurance, registration, and yes gas. I got closer to 20mpg on average.

I know it is case by case, but may I ask how much you’re paying for everything?

My insurance is quoted at around $900/6 months, which is not bad given it costs $600/6 months for the Camry.

This was years ago I owned one - but wow, that’s high. Do you have a clean record?

Yup. Clean record. My best friend is selling it over to me because he’s leaving the country.

My insurance only has me pay like $101 for liability, and if I did full coverage it’d only be $200. Who are you insured through? For reference, I only have 1 ticket.

Mine is through Progressive. I’m under 30, so maybe that’s why, but I’ve been paying my own insurance since 18. No tickets, no violations. 1 accident at 19, payout was $2000 as I hit a car in the parking lot.

$101 is per month or every 6 months?
