I’m considering the new Corolla but wanted to ask about the safety systems. Can they be turned off or minimized? If so, how many menus and buttons do you have to go through? I know they’ll reactivate automatically, but I’m curious about how much control you have.
It’s not just the Corolla—most new cars now come with these advanced safety features. For example, Intelligent Speed Assistance became mandatory in July, and it can’t be permanently disabled.
From my experience, it takes about four button presses to adjust most of the safety features. Lane guidance can be turned off using the steering wheel controls, and speed sign assistance is in the menu.

Thanks! So that’s lane guidance and speed sign alerts. Is there an option to customize how they behave?
@Pip
Yes, you can tweak the settings in the menu, but they’ll reset when you restart the car. Keeping the settings icon on the main display helps access them faster.
I find blind-spot monitoring more useful than some of the mandatory features. It’s not standard, but it’s a lifesaver in certain situations. Wish it was included across the board.

I agree. Blind-spot monitoring should be a priority, especially for larger vehicles or city driving. It’s frustrating that features like lane-keeping assist get pushed more.

Blind-spot monitoring saved me a few times in my Yaris. Over-the-shoulder checks don’t always work, especially with large B-pillars. It’s one feature I wouldn’t go without.
The Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) system is helpful too, but it can be overzealous. I’ve had it slam the brakes for a pigeon once while reversing out of a busy parking lot.

True, but RCTA encourages better habits like reversing into parking bays. It’s easier to drive out forward than deal with surprises while reversing.

I agree. RCTA has its quirks, but overall, it’s useful. Better to have it than not, especially in crowded areas.
Has anyone confirmed if the 2024 Corolla includes a heated steering wheel? I’ve heard mixed things about whether it’s available in the UK.

As far as I know, the current UK models don’t include it, though it’s available in other markets. Frustrating omission for sure.

Some trims, like the Suzuki Swace (basically a rebadged Corolla), include it. Weird that Toyota doesn’t offer it widely.
