Hey everyone… I just got a 2024 Hybrid Capstone—first truck, first Tundra!
I like the rearview mirror camera, but at night, it’s awful—like looking through Vaseline. My dealer says this is normal… If that’s true, why hasn’t Toyota fixed it with a recall?
I live in a cold, snowy area and really need a clear view of what’s behind me. The rear window doesn’t have a wiper, and I can’t reach it to clean it either.
If you have this feature, can you let me know:
What year and trim you have?
If you have this nighttime visibility issue or not?
Trying to gather info so I can bring it up with Toyota. Feels like a real safety issue to me!
I have a Limited, and it doesn’t have this feature, but it’s pretty normal for cameras to struggle in low light. The sensor has to boost sensitivity, which either makes the image grainy or blurry if they apply noise reduction. Even high-end cameras have this issue, so the tiny ones in vehicles are going to be worse.
I’ve got a ‘23 Capstone, no issues with the rearview mirror camera. Maybe the auto-dimming is messing with the image? Try adjusting the mirror settings.

Good idea! I’ll try turning off auto-dimming and see if that helps.
This is my third vehicle with a rearview camera—currently in a 2024 Tundra Platinum. Had a 2019 Traverse and a 2023 Acadia before. I’m in Ontario, and in winter, the cameras have been pretty useless at night on all of them.
Not really a safety concern for me since I can just switch back to a regular mirror. My Tundra is actually my first work truck with this feature… before that, I didn’t even have a rearview mirror because of my contractor cap.
