Hi! I just bought a 2017 Yaris for my daughter, and I’m trying to upgrade the stereo so she can have Apple CarPlay—I want her focused on driving. My question is: can I add the extra buttons for answering and hanging up calls to her steering wheel without needing to change the clock spring?
Also, her current steering wheel has lane assist, but the new button set I’m looking at replaces that with cruise control. Would that mess up any of the existing functions? I attached photos of her current steering wheel and the new part I want to add. The new button set has 10 pins.
Or does anyone have a better suggestion for upgrading to an Apple CarPlay unit and adding steering wheel controls?
The buttons to answer and hang up calls are not really worth it since the main screen is only a few inches away from those buttons anyway To answer your question the part that connects the steering wheel to the car’s electrical system is the same no matter which buttons are on the steering wheel only the basic model with no buttons has a different part
On another note if you buy a Sony main screen they have a really easy way to connect the steering wheel controls it’s just three wires Don’t get tricked into buying some strange device for the steering wheel controls
@Joss
This many non-original parts will give you a system that uses different levels of electrical resistance just plug the buttons into the main screen and set it up in the settings menu

This car does not have the ability to automatically keep a certain speed can we set it up through the radio to do something else Or will it still automatically be the button that helps you stay in your lane

Do you have a Sony main screen you suggest or any Sony one
Ax4000 and up depending on how much you want to spend Ax6000 is my favorite right now Go for a screen that uses touch like a phone and not one that you have to press hard on if you can afford it A phone-like screen feels like a phone screen one that you have to press hard on is that soft screen feeling like older touch screens used to be
@Joss
Wow that was more than I was planning to spend since I just bought her the car I was looking to add the buttons to the steering wheel then get this unit to also add the camera that shows behind you It says the necessary installation parts are only $66 to get the steering wheel buttons to work Do you think it will work what do you think
@Beryl
If you get the buttons you linked above you’ll lose the lane keeping button which may cause you some problems at some point I really don’t see the point with such a small car
The best thing you can do is open the instructions for installing that main screen and see what the wires look like Hopefully it has the steering wheel inputs in the connection which are usually labeled sw1 sw2 and ground
Also it’s strange that you want the car to have the ability to use phone apps to keep her focused on driving Those are somewhat opposite ideas as using phone apps is all about the touch screen and looking away from the road to use the screen

She has no idea how to get anywhere so she needs the navigation using the steering wheel to answer calls and texts using the voice assistant
I mean it sounds like she needs a phone holder to show maps A lot cheaper than changing the whole main screen
I would suggest a certain brand and model but make sure it has the Android operating system you’ll want a small amplifier for your speakers and the steering controls are easy three wires swc/swc+/swc- and then just set it up I have all the diagrams of how the wires connect if you need them as I have the exact car
