Anyone else heard the rumors about the new GR86 being way different from the BRZ?

So, I’ve been reading some stuff about the next-gen Toyota GR86, and it seems like it could be really different from the Subaru BRZ this time around. Apparently, Toyota might ditch the shared platform and go with a completely new engine and chassis for the GR86. Has anyone else heard about this? Thoughts on how this could change the car?

Yeah, I saw something about that! They might use the engine from the GR Yaris or Corolla, right? That’d be wild. More power, maybe even AWD.

Wait, what’s the GR Yaris? I haven’t heard of that before.

Oh, it’s a small hot hatch from Toyota, but it wasn’t available here in the US. It’s got a turbo 3-cylinder engine that makes around 300 hp. The GR Corolla is like the bigger, meaner version we did get. Same engine, more power!

Ah, gotcha! Thanks for explaining! That engine in a GR86 would be insane. :flushed:

Honestly, I’m kinda sad if the GR86 and BRZ won’t be the same anymore. I loved that they were twins but had their own little quirks.

Yeah, same here. It’s always fun seeing people debate which one was ‘better’ when they were pretty much the same lol. But more power would be a nice tradeoff.

I don’t think anyone’s gonna complain about a turbocharged engine though. I’ve always felt like the GR86 needed more power, so if this is true, I’m all for it!

Right? Everyone’s been modding them to get more power anyway, so might as well make it official from the factory.

Exactly! Plus, the manual transmission is still supposed to stay, which is a win in my book.

Wonder what the price bump will be though if they go with a new platform and engine… gotta be more expensive, right?

Probably, yeah. Especially with a turbo engine and potentially AWD. But hey, we can dream of a sub-$40k price tag, right? :joy:

I heard Toyota might stop working with Subaru on this project altogether. Kinda bummed about that.

Yeah, I read something similar. But hey, if it means Toyota’s taking the reins and making the GR86 even better, I guess it’s not all bad.
