Anyone else hearing a knocking sound from the back of their 2019 Corolla LE?

I bought a used 2019 Corolla LE about a week ago. It had around 37,700 miles on it. Everything felt fine during the test drive and even on my way home.

But after a couple of days, I started hearing this knocking or thumping sound coming from the trunk area. I tried putting some padding under the jack and that helped for a short drive around the block.

The next day, the noise came back. I even took the jack out completely and went on a longer drive, but the sound was still there.

It mostly happens when I go from a stop into drive or reverse, when I let off the brake, or when I drive over bumps. It really feels like something in the back is knocking or moving around. I’m not great with car stuff so I honestly don’t know what it could be.

The car is still under the dealer warranty for about 50 more days, but they couldn’t give me a service appointment until the end of the month.

Has anyone else had this happen? Any guesses what could be making that noise?

Thanks in advance for any tips or ideas.

This might sound silly but I’ve actually seen this happen a few times. Check your license plate—if it’s a bit loose, it could be making that knocking noise when you drive.

If the car’s still in good shape, it’s probably nothing serious. Check the spare tire and the cover over it. Maybe something small fell behind or under the seat too. Sometimes noise can come from things shifting around in the glove box or under the seats, so have a look all around.
