i’ve heard the 8-speed automatic can be complicated and always searching for gears. is this actually a big issue? i’m hoping the camry is still reliable and smooth to drive like it’s always been.
whoever told you that probably hasn’t driven one.
i’ve had a 2018 since they changed everything, and i love it. it actually feels fun to drive because the gears adjust well to different speeds. mine is fwd, not awd, but my partner’s awd version is great too.
my friends also have 2023 camrys and love them. only thing they’d want is a little more hp, but at 33+ mpg, it’s hard to complain.
@Huxley
that’s good to hear. i really like the new styling and color options. i don’t care much about hp either—whatever it has will be an upgrade from my 130hp 2004 corolla.

oh, for sure. i switched from a v6 lexus to a 4-cylinder camry, and honestly, the only difference i notice is the gas savings. i fuel up once a week.
the 8-speed is actually pretty fun to drive. mine, being from the first generation of this setup, sometimes sits between 2,500-3,500 rpm before adjusting, but my partner’s newer one doesn’t do that, so i think they fixed it.
the only downside is i baby this car because i don’t want it scratched. it looks too good.
@Huxley
i’d take occasional gear hunting over a cvt any day. thanks for the info.
i have a 2023 camry hybrid xse. i only drive it in d (haven’t used the paddle shifters), but i’ve never had any gear hunting issues. the car is smooth and quiet.
i had a 2018 tacoma off-road before this, and that thing really searched for gears. compared to that, the camry is completely different—no gear-hunting problems at all.
@Keir
thanks. this pretty much confirms i want a camry.

try test-driving the hybrid.
i’ve driven both the gas and hybrid rav4, and the difference is huge. the 8-speed is solid, but it does search for gears, and the shift lag can be pretty bad.
@CorollaCrew3
what year rav4 are you talking about? i read that they fixed the transmission issues in the camry after 2019. not sure about the rav4. also, hybrids are a bit out of my budget.

2020 for both gas and hybrid.
if hybrids are out of budget, don’t test-drive one—you’ll want it.
@CorollaCrew3
i was wrong about pricing. hybrids aren’t that much more, but they’re harder to find than regular models. also, i just don’t like cvts. i know toyota’s are reliable, but i don’t like how they drive.
@jordansmith
ecvts in hybrids are completely different from belt-driven cvts. the bad ones are the belt cvts.
you’re right about the pricing—hybrids have been crazy expensive lately.

i’ll keep hybrids in mind, but i’ll only get one if i find a color i like. most of the ones that aren’t overpriced are silver or white, and i don’t want either of those.
@CorollaCrew3
the hybrid has an ecvt, not a regular transmission.

yeah, i mentioned that in another comment in this thread.
toyota has been making 6, 8, and 10-speed transmissions for a while. out of all brands, toyota transmissions are some of the most reliable. especially their ecvt in hybrids. that thing will last forever.
