As the title says, I’ve always wondered whether these are Japanese elements. Most of the JDM LC I have seen are without stripes. So this makes me start to think whether it’s American. Anyone know the history behind these stripes and where they originated from?
These stripes aren’t just a Japanese market thing, they’ve been offered in several regions, including the Middle East, Australia, and Africa. Toyota has used similar retro-style decals on various Land Cruiser 70 Series models over the years, often as a nod to the classic versions from the ’80s and ’90s. They’re especially common on special editions and heritage models, with the Middle East being one of the most consistent markets for them.
I can’t speak about the history however these stripes differ from one model year to the next, from one trim to the next. Some people can identify the exact model year of a certain car just by the stripes on the side. They sometimes are dealer specific as well (not OEM). This is a link from a store in the middle east, for your viewing pleasure.
I want to get a white LC just to do this.
Merlot Red 70 series pull off the decals the best imo.
The 30th Anniversary models did not come with graphics in Japan. I think they are market dependent or dealer dependent.
I’m no expert but my Saudi spec 75 series has very similar OEM graphics.

Must be a 40th anniversary edition? I have the same on my 70 series but I prefer the clean look tbf.
@Ezra
Actually, it wasn’t. If memory serves correct the 40th anniversaries were sometime in the late 90s. This is a late 80s vehicle.
This isn’t an 80s vehicle. I’m nearly certain it’s a 2024+.

You are correct. I’m just saying… mine is from 1988 and not JDM and it has the same graphics, well before the 40th.
@Shea
Ah I misunderstood. Man I’d love to own an 80s 70 series. Consider me jealous.
90s design element.
