Automatic transmission fluid for power steering, is it dangerous?

Hello Forum Members,

I own a 1987 Camry AT LE in France and need to top up the power steering fluid, which is below the mark. Initially, Toyota sold me ‘Automatic transmission and power steering fluid D III,’ but it’s no longer available. They now recommend ‘Automatic transmission fluid WS’ for both transmission and power steering, but I’m unsure about using it.

Can I safely use this new fluid in my power steering system, given the change in recommendation? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

P.S. I can share pictures of both bottles if needed

Toyota specifies Dexron II or III ATF for power steering. However, some power steering pumps can use ATF instead of traditional power steering fluid. The ATF used for 4th generation Camrys (2004 and onward) is ATF WS (World Standard) fluid, which is different from Dexron III fluid. It is essential to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.

While Toyota ATF WS is similar to Dexron III, it is not technically the same. The owner’s manual and the power steering pump cap should indicate the correct fluid to use.

To be safe, I recommend using a compatible fluid. If you have Valvoline Maxlife ATF (which is Dexron II and III compatible), it should work as a replacement for Toyota WS4. If you are uncertain, consult a professional mechanic or Toyota service center for personalized advice.
