Best hitch size for a slightly lifted 5th gen 4Runner?

I’m getting ready to tow a 6x12 U-Haul trailer with my 2021 TRD Off-Road 4Runner. It’s got a mild lift—1.2" in the rear and leveled up front—with stock tires. I’ll be out of town right up until I need to leave, so I won’t have time to measure or go buy a hitch locally.

Can anyone give me a solid guess on what size drop hitch I should order from Amazon? I was thinking about a 2" drop, but I’ve also seen some people mention needing a 6" drop. What would be the safest bet?

Thanks!

If budget allows and you want to be covered for future towing needs, get an adjustable B&W hitch. That way you don’t have to guess or buy another one later.

But without knowing your exact receiver height, no one can say for sure what drop you’ll need.

U-Haul says their trailers are best towed at around an 18" hitch height, with a max of 25" for the 6x12. Measure your 4Runner’s hitch height (from ground to inside bottom of receiver) and find a drop that brings you close to 18".

@Kellan
Appreciate the info, but I can’t measure—out of town for work. Just trying to make a best guess now so I’m not scrambling last minute.

Unfortunately I won’t be able to measure since I’m out of town working, and I’ll need to leave when I get home.

Even a best guess estimation would be good. I realize it’s not the ideal solution.

My stock 4Runner’s hitch height is about 18", and I use a 2" drop. Since your rear is lifted 1.2", that puts you slightly over but still within U-Haul’s max height. A 2" drop hitch should work fine.

@Kellan
Appreciate it, thank you :slightly_smiling_face:
I’ll order both a regular and a 2" drop hitch and return whichever doesn’t work.

With trailer tongue weight, your 4Runner will likely squat a little, which helps level things out. I think a 2" drop will be just right.

@Kellan
It won’t be heavily loaded—just a smoker and some boxes. Thanks again!

@Kellan
Perfect, thank you!

I’ve got more lift than you and tow a boat with a standard 2" drop hitch—no issues. You’ll be fine.

Sorry, just to clarify—should I go with a 2" drop or do I actually need a 6"?
