I’m working on a 2007 Yaris and what tools do you suggest for pulling the spring attached to the cylinder off? I tried with pliers but the springs are too hard. I also leaked the cylinder but it stopped once I closed the rubber on it with my hand. Any suggestions are appreciated, guys. Thank you in advance.
I just did those a few months ago. I used a small pair of vice grips and had minimal trouble. By far easier than my jeep’s drums.
There are specific tool kits for setting springs and dealing with the clips on the pins. Consider buying the tool kit since they’re usually not expensive.
It’s possible to use other tools, but the job will be much harder and you can cause damage to the brakes or hurt yourself given how much force you need to set the springs.
Patience is the tool you need.
Yeah good luck. Drums suck.

They don’t. I did 350k km with my drum brakes and they still are fine. In the meantime, disks need to be changed 5 times.

I meant to service. They suck to work on. I’ve worked on mine one time ever; I’m at 240k miles, but it was still a bitch to work on.
@Emory
If you have 3 tools that’s ok usually.

I have all the tools in the world in my shop and I still hate working on them.
