BYD outselling Toyota in the Japanese EV market is big news, but some are saying it’s not surprising given Toyota’s slow approach to EVs. What do you think? Is this just a blip, or a sign of things to come?
This isn’t surprising at all. Toyota hasn’t been focusing much on EVs, so the bar is really low.
Toyota EVs aren’t great, so this was bound to happen.

I’ve got five trash cans at home, and I feel insulted that you’re comparing them to Toyota EVs, lol.
Doesn’t Toyota only have one EV? The bZ4X? It’s bigger than the average car most people in Japan prefer, so it’s not a tough target for BYD to beat. Also, the article seems to be overselling this—it’s like 2,200 BYDs sold versus 2,000 Toyotas.
@Marlow
The bZ4X could have been great if it didn’t have such slow charging speeds.

Apparently, they did that to prioritize battery longevity.

Lexus also has the RZ 450e, but it’s not really a strong contender.
I’ll pass on Chinese-made cars, thanks.

Have you even driven a BYD? I’m in the US, driving a Sienna, but I’ve heard a lot of people in Europe and Australia praising their cars.
@Florence
I’m American, but I saw one in Mexico, and it was pretty impressive.

People said the same about Hyundai and Kia until they started having to maintain them for years.

Isn’t the battery pack the most important part of an EV? BYD and CATL are leaders in that field.
@Florence
In the US, people think of buses when they hear BYD. LA and Long Beach run BYD electric buses, and they’re surprisingly powerful.

You’d be surprised. Where I live, there are a lot of BYDs on the road, and they’re actually pretty decent.

They’re better than decent. I sat in one in Mexico, and it was legit. Tesla is lucky BYDs aren’t sold in the US.

Wait until someone hacks your car and drives you into a wall.
@Fallon
Tesla’s FSD is probably more likely to malfunction than anything BYD makes.
@Fallon
Israel’s done similar things before, so it’s not just China you should be worried about.
Can people stop saying “EV” when they mean “BEV”? EV includes hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fuel cells. It’s an important distinction.
