Check Engine Light P0441… gas cap?

Could this be because of a loose gas cap? Has anyone else had this issue before? Trying to figure it out.

It’s an evap code, and it could be anything from a chewed line to a loose gas cap or a bad purge valve. You could try throwing parts at it or actually diagnosing it. Hard to say more from here, but the simplest fix is checking the gas cap first. If it’s loose, replace it, clear the codes, and drive around to see if the problem comes back.

Grab a code reader and do some searching around this forum or check Facebook groups. That’ll give you a good idea of what’s going on.

I’ve got these lights but not that specific code, any clue what’s up?

I had this happen before, swapped out the gas cap and it fixed the problem. Not sure about your code though.

@Delilah
Oh nice! Yeah, my gas cap doesn’t seem to be clicking the way it should. Maybe I’ll try that.

Start with an OEM gas cap, it’s cheap and easy. If the code pops back up, you might end up getting a lean bank or cat code too. The only way to tell if there’s a leak without getting underneath the car is to listen for one.

I had that code after putting in an oiled air filter. I cleaned the MAF sensor and it went away. Tried a new gas cap too but that didn’t fix it for me.

The code is for the evap system, nothing to do with the MAF sensor. You should focus on the codes you get for diagnosing instead of swapping random parts.

For me, it was the purge valve on my 2006. The lights went away after replacing that.

Purge valve. Did you try looking it up?

I cleaned the gas cap and disconnected the battery, and now the lights are off. Is this just a temporary fix or is it actually solved?

Give it a bit of time. Disconnecting the battery resets things, so take it for a drive and see if the lights come back.

I’ve tried something similar—bought an OEM gas cap, but the lights keep coming back after a while. Codes are P1442/P1445. Anyone else have ideas?

That’s an emissions issue. Could be a vacuum leak or something in the system.

Any suggestions on where to start with fixing it? Should I try a bypass?

Take it to a local mechanic or a master tech. They can check it for around $150-$200. It’s a good place to start.

@ricdiamond
You got that OEM gas cap from Lexus? I had the same issue and went to Toyota instead—it saved me some cash.

Yeah, it could be something in the emissions system or exhaust. Worth checking out.

Might be the gas cap, but worst case, you could be dealing with a leaking exhaust manifold or a bad catalytic converter. I had to replace my cats recently and ended up installing a magnaflow overland setup.
