I have a 2012 Prius with 147k miles. While driving today, the coolant warning light came on for a second and then turned off. I thought it was weird but kept going. When I got to my destination a few minutes later, I noticed red liquid near the front wheel. I checked under the hood and saw that the coolant level was low and it looked like it had splashed all over the engine bay.
Luckily there was an auto parts shop nearby, so I bought coolant and filled it up. I let the car run for a while to see if anything was leaking again, but nothing showed. I drove home and the level stayed the same.
Has anyone had something like this happen before? What should I check next?
Sounds like the water pump. Happens a lot with Gen 3 models. While you’re at it, changing the thermostat too is a smart move. Just make sure you buy the original Aisin pump — the cheaper ones don’t last.

I’d suggest having someone look at it first. You might end up replacing parts that are still fine. From what you said, those guesses make sense, but nobody here has seen your car.

Totally agree. People keep saying water pump, but unless you’re sure, it’s just a guess. I had water pumps last longer than the head gasket. One at 198k, another at 220k.

For sure! I’ve got a mechanic checking it Thursday. But I still ordered the water pump and thermostat just in case.

If your mechanic says it’s not those, I’d hold off on replacing good Toyota parts. Sometimes the original ones last longer than new aftermarket ones.
