Coolant leak on my Prius… anyone else dealt with this?

I have a 2012 Prius with 147k miles. While driving today, the coolant warning light came on for a second and then turned off. I thought it was weird but kept going. When I got to my destination a few minutes later, I noticed red liquid near the front wheel. I checked under the hood and saw that the coolant level was low and it looked like it had splashed all over the engine bay.

Luckily there was an auto parts shop nearby, so I bought coolant and filled it up. I let the car run for a while to see if anything was leaking again, but nothing showed. I drove home and the level stayed the same.

Has anyone had something like this happen before? What should I check next?

Sounds like the water pump. Happens a lot with Gen 3 models. While you’re at it, changing the thermostat too is a smart move. Just make sure you buy the original Aisin pump — the cheaper ones don’t last.

@Tate
Thanks for this! I saw some people mention gaskets too but sounds like it’s more likely the pump and thermostat.

Yeah I’d guess the water pump too. What you’re describing sounds exactly like what mine did when it started to go bad.

Swap the thermostat too — it’s just easier to do both together.

Thank you! I’ll get both replaced tomorrow.

@StephCOPELAND
I’d suggest having someone look at it first. You might end up replacing parts that are still fine. From what you said, those guesses make sense, but nobody here has seen your car.

Totally agree. People keep saying water pump, but unless you’re sure, it’s just a guess. I had water pumps last longer than the head gasket. One at 198k, another at 220k.

For sure! I’ve got a mechanic checking it Thursday. But I still ordered the water pump and thermostat just in case.

@StephCOPELAND
If your mechanic says it’s not those, I’d hold off on replacing good Toyota parts. Sometimes the original ones last longer than new aftermarket ones.

Water pump sounds likely. Mine did the same on my 2015 at 129k miles.

When did you replace yours? Hoping it’s not the head gasket in my case.

It’s been about 3 months and around 4,000 miles. No issues since.

Had the same problem. Turned out to be the water pump like others said.

Good news is it’s not that hard to fix. You just need a socket wrench, a 10mm and 12mm, plus an extension.

Taking off the front right tire helps a lot with reaching the last bolt.

@Soren
Thanks a lot! Planning to do it myself so this helps. How long ago did you fix yours?

About three months back. No leaks since then.

Head gasket is something to keep in mind too. Has your EGR system ever been cleaned? Do you feel the engine shake when starting it cold?

Water pumps tend to wear out after 100k miles. I used the Aisin WPT-190 which is what Toyota usually uses.

@Kerry
No engine shaking and I’ve never cleaned the EGR. Got the car at 86k. I’ll go for the Aisin, thanks for the tip.

To get better help here, you should share:

  • Your Prius year, model, and mileage
  • What you were doing when the warning came up
  • If you noticed anything weird like sounds or smells
  • If you pulled any error codes from the car

That info makes it easier for everyone to help.
