Dealer wants to install GPS tracker on my car… anyone dealt with this?

Thinking about buying a MKV 3.0 Premium, but the dealer is pushing hard to install an aftermarket GPS tracker/alarm. It’s called SWAT, and the salesman claims it runs off an aux power port. But from what I’ve seen online, it actually taps into the OBD wiring for power.Anyone here have one of these? Does it cause problems down the line?

Are you paying cash or financing?

Paying cash. I think they use these trackers for inventory management.

Then why even consider it?

I don’t want it. But the dealer is using it as a way to add hidden fees. Just trying to figure out if it’s going to be a problem after I buy the car.

@Smith
Don’t let them install it. Tell them no.

@Smith
It’s pretty invasive. They can track your location anytime. I’ve even heard of some dealers selling this info or hackers getting access.

I’m guessing this is a used Supra from a used car dealer? I used to work for a company that installed these for dealerships.The issue is that Supra/BMW electronics don’t like constant power draws, which these trackers can cause. I’d push back or find another dealer. If you’re paying cash, they have no reason to force this on you.

It’s brand new. Paying in full. Dealer is just one of the few that has the exact spec I want. Delivery is in April.

If you’re paying cash for a brand-new car, tell them to shove it. The car already has factory tracking through the app. This is just the dealer trying to squeeze more money out of you.

Some dealers sell tracker data to insurance companies, which could impact your rates. You’re buying it outright—just say no and stand your ground.

I just use the factory GPS system that comes with the Supra. No extra trackers.

They can’t force you to add anything aftermarket unless you agree to it. Dealers try this nonsense all the time.It blows my mind that people walk in with $60k in cash but still get tricked by these scams. :man_shrugging:

I had a dealer offer me one from Guidepoint. They said I could opt out after 3 months and remove it at my next service. Thing is, it never actually worked.Only thing I liked was that it tracked movement, not just parked locations like the built-in Toyota/BMW one. Ended up removing it, never had issues, and wasn’t charged.

Don’t do it. Too many stories of stolen cars getting tracked by these things. If you want a GPS, install your own. Congrats on the Supra!

Dealerships install trackers for different reasons—some for security, others just to add fees. If they’re forcing it and won’t remove it, that’s a bad sign.If you actually want a GPS, buy one yourself. That way, you control what it does and avoid extra fees. I use Transpoco, easy to install and no dealer nonsense.If they won’t budge, I’d find another dealer or at least push hard to get it disabled before buying.

Just get a Z4 M40i or M240i instead. That way, you skip the Toyota dealer headaches altogether.

Not sure why he’s getting downvoted. Toyota dealerships pull this kind of thing all the time.I’d take an M40i—same engine, convertible option, and now comes with a manual.OP, just tell the dealer to get lost. There’s already tracking from the factory, this is just a cash grab.
