Did my own oil change on my Prius… anyone else do theirs too?

I changed the oil myself on my 2012 Prius (gen 3) and it’s running great now. Saved a good amount of money too. Anyone else here do their own oil changes?

Nice job… always feels good when you do it yourself and it works out.

Right? Feels like a small win every time.

Prius might not be the flashiest car… but it’s one of the best for saving money long-term. I like it.

Look into getting a fumoto valve next time. Makes draining oil way easier.

That’s a solid suggestion. Kinda like that Matrix scene… makes you rethink what’s really needed lol.

Nice work man. More folks should try it.

I still remember when oil changes were $19.99 at Jiffy Lube… plus the sticker with the reminder. That was easy. Now? Full synthetic is $90+.

Last time I paid someone to do it, they used a power tool and messed up the drain plug. I had to buy a tool to get it off.

Never letting someone else do it again. Now I do mine… and my two kids do theirs too on our hybrids.

@Stewart
Exactly. It’s not just about saving money. You know you’re using the right oil and filter… and you avoid that rushed work from someone who might not care. I’ve heard too many stories about stripped plugs and overtightened filters.

Then they try to sell you stuff you don’t even need. Total headache.

@Arlo
And don’t get me started on when they crank the oil filter on like it’s welded.

@Arlo
Honestly… even if someone offered to do it for free, I wouldn’t trust it. I use the cheap orange Fram filters and still feel better doing it myself.

No shame there. I used them too for years. Saw a video showing what’s inside and it made me pause, but if you’re changing it often, it probably doesn’t matter that much.

Keep doing what you’re doing. These are skills that more people should pick up.

Yep… you can usually do it for around $30 and in the time it takes just to drive to the shop. So it saves time and money.

And if you’re not replacing your own bulbs, filters, and wiper blades, you’re probably spending more than you need to.

Fluids are trickier but even those can be done with some patience. Do what you can and you’ll barely need to visit a shop.

I came here just to see who would talk like this… didn’t disappoint.

How much are you saving? I only save around $15 compared to getting it done at the shop, so not a huge difference for me.

They tried to charge me $280 here… I did it myself for about $100. It’s way too expensive where I live.

@Lexus_Mania
That’s wild. $280 for an oil change? That’s robbery.

Very nice man. Always a good feeling doing it on your own.
