Do You All Like Yarises? I'm Thinking of Buying a Used One. Any Generations or Transmissions to Avoid in the US?

I’m considering getting a used Yaris. Are there any specific generations, transmissions, or other aspects I should avoid, especially in the US market?

All Yaris models from 2007 to 2019 are great.

Is the hatchback style better than the sedan?

Hatchbacks are always better.

The sedan’s great too, don’t listen to the others.

I got a 2007 sedan and I’m envious that Canada had access to a 5-door hatch vs the US only getting the 3-door at launch. Do 5-door hatch > sedan > 3-door hatch. All this is out the window if you don’t plan on using the rear seats for passengers.

What about the new 2020 model?

My little sister’s 2007 Yaris has 206k miles on the clock and is still going strong.

I will not stand for this Yaris discrimination.

TL;DW All US model Yarises (and Echos) are excellent. Same engine/drivetrain for all years. Basically no maintenance issues as long as fluids are maintained on time.

I keep hearing that some Yarises are actually Mazdas! Are those good?

Yes, that’s correct for a few years a rebadged Mazda 2 was sold in the US. First, as the Scion iA (2015 and onwards), and later as the Toyota Yaris (2016) onwards.

How can you tell which one you’re getting? In the US, sedans from 2015 up (Scion iA, Yaris iA) and hatchbacks from 2020 up are Mazdas. “True” Yarises are 2007-2014 sedans and 2007-2019 hatchbacks. These are the ones that are highly recommended in the video.

Are the Mazdas as good as the Yaris? Maybe. There weren’t as many sold in the US as the earlier ones, so while it’s tough to say if they’re as reliable, it could potentially mean lower parts availability as the years go by. Also, note that these are completely different platforms, so nearly nothing is interchangeable between the two.

I have a 2009 with 289k miles and it still starts and runs.

@Nadine
Or even if maintenance isn’t done on time. I ran mine with a dry dipstick twice and still got to 212k miles before it needed parking.

Plural Yaris is Yareeeee
