Help me decide between two cars… both seem great but very different

I’m stuck between two choices for my next car. One is a 2012 Avalon Limited with navigation, 90k miles, Certified Used from a dealership with great reviews. The other is a 2015 Lexus CT 200h, 95k miles, also Certified Used from the same dealership. Both cars are priced almost the same. I know they’re totally different types of vehicles, but I’m really torn. Any advice would be super helpful.

Certified used for a car that old isn’t a manufacturer program; it’s just the dealership’s certification.

The CT 200h is much smaller compared to the Avalon. Are you looking for a big car or a small one?

@CorollaChris4
That’s what I’m trying to figure out. I’ve usually had smaller, sporty cars, but I went on a road trip in an Avalon recently and loved the comfort. I’m really torn. Also, the certification is just from this dealership, but it seemed decent when they explained it.

@Sorrell
I’ve owned several Avalons over the years and currently drive a 2019 model. The 2012 version has an exceptionally smooth and cushy ride, even compared to newer models. If it’s in good condition, I’d highly recommend it.

Just keep in mind, the V6 isn’t the most fuel-efficient. You’re probably looking at around 20mpg.

@Flint
Yeah, I was expecting about 20mpg. This is such a hard decision .

I got a 2007 Camry Hybrid years ago and loved the fuel savings. It lasted me 285k miles before I upgraded to a 2019 Avalon Hybrid.

That said, hybrids are great but take into account their smaller size and maintenance costs. Do you mostly drive in the city or on highways? Hybrids excel in city driving. Also, if you have a family or are planning one, the Lexus might feel cramped compared to the Avalon.

If you’re thinking long-term, consider where you’ll be in the next 5–7 years and which car fits better.

@Bao
Thanks, that’s really helpful. You’re right—this will probably be our main vehicle for the next several years, and we’re planning to start a family soon.

@Bao
How much does it usually cost to replace the hybrid battery?

Mine was under warranty, but I think it would’ve cost around $2500 back in 2015.

It depends on what you need. Are you prioritising space or fuel economy? That Certified Used warranty might not cover much on a car that old. Also, what are the prices for each vehicle?

That’s exactly the kind of input I needed. Most of my driving is in the city, but we’re also planning for kids soon, so space is definitely a factor. Thanks .

I’m in a similar position trying to decide between a Ford F250 Dually and a Honda Fit. I’ll wait to see what advice others give you.

Both vehicles are so similar—seats, steering wheel, pedals…

@Lior
Exactly, you get my struggle.

@Lior
Very relatable predicament.

I think I’m leaning more towards the Avalon since we’re likely to have kids soon. Space might matter more in the long run.

@Sorrell
Go for the Avalon. It’s a much better car.

I probably will. I take a couple of road trips a year, and driving an Avalon was a completely different experience from my usual smaller cars.

Both cars are front-wheel drive, but the Avalon is heavier and has more space. The Lexus is a small car and no longer in production. If you’re planning for a family, the Avalon might be the better choice. Still, negotiate the price down—it’s a 13-year-old car. It should be closer to $10–11k, even with low mileage. Good luck.

Why not look for a hybrid Avalon? It could give you the benefits of both options.
