I’m trying to decide between an early 2000s GX 470 and Land Cruiser 100. Both vehicles are from the West, have low mileage (just over 100k), and are rust-free.
The GX 470 has a centre locking differential, while the LC 100 comes with both centre and rear lockers. My main goal is to use the vehicle for overlanding trips to dispersed campgrounds in Colorado and light off-roading in nearby states like Utah.
I’m planning to fit 33-inch tyres and maybe add a 2-inch suspension lift. Also, the timing belt replacement cost for the GX seems cheaper than for the LC 100.
If you’ve used either for similar adventures, convince me why the LC 100 might be the better option for me.
They’ve got the same engine, so why would the timing belt job be cheaper on the GX? Both are solid choices, but the 100 series has more interior space, which is a big plus.
The split tailgate is a big win for me. Aside from that, the two are quite similar—each has pros and cons, and the styling is subjective. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with either. I almost got a 100 because of the tailgate, but a mint 80 series came along, so I grabbed that instead. Still keeping an eye out for a 100, though.
@Raine
Agree on the tailgate. I’ve had plenty of campsite moments sitting on the comfy tailgate of my 100 series. The GX’s swing gate might seem cool at first, but it’s not practical. If it’s raining or you’re parallel parked, it becomes a pain—especially since the door swings toward the curb here in North America.
I had the same debate and went with a ’99 Land Cruiser. It’s the perfect size for all the outdoor stuff I do, including what you’re planning. If it were smaller, I’d feel cramped taking my family along.
The GX feels a bit sportier and gets slightly better mileage, but it’s not like it’s a fast or efficient vehicle. It’s just less sluggish compared to the LC. Neither would win a race against a minivan unless it’s off-road.
@Willie
Funny you mentioned minivans—we’re actually thinking about getting a Sienna soon. They’ve got a woodland edition with decent clearance for a van. Anyway, I’d still choose the LC. Every time I drive it, I feel like I’m in a tank, even if it’s just for groceries.

Edited: The LC gives you more room. Plus, not everyone has a Land Cruiser—GX 460s are everywhere.
Mine says it needs premium… 1999 model.
It’s written on the fuel door, but many people here will say it’s not necessary. I’ve run 89–92 octane without issues. Lexus models are a bit pickier, though.
I’ve got an ’07 FJ Cruiser and just picked up an ’01 Land Cruiser. Honestly, they don’t compare at all. The LC is in a league of its own. The FJC is fun, but the LC feels so much more solid.
