So I’m a bit puzzled about something. My Camry shows I’m getting around 46 to 51 MPG for full tank cycles , but the range estimate only says 470 to 480 miles on a full tank. If I’m really getting 47 or 48 MPG, shouldn’t that be closer to 580 or maybe even 600 miles? Why does the range estimator always show something lower than what the MPG suggests? Anyone figured this out?
The car’s range estimate depends a lot on your driving style. It’s never going to be exact because every little thing—how you press the gas, how often you brake, how fast you go—can change your mileage. The car’s just making a rough guess based on recent habits.
@Rex
Yeah that kind of tracks. Thing is, back when I was speeding and it was cold, I was getting like 38 MPG. But now I’ve been driving way more gently—60 on the highway, 55 in the city, barely braking. My MPG jumped to 49-50, but the range still shows the same numbers as before. Just odd it doesn’t update to reflect that.
There’s a pretty big gas reserve in that tank. It’s a 13-gallon tank, but when your gauge hits ‘E’, you usually only fill up around 10 gallons. That means you’ve got about 3 gallons left, or roughly 150 miles, and the car doesn’t count that in the range estimate.
@Tracy
Oh wow! That totally explains it. Makes perfect sense now. Appreciate it!
