How are fog lights supposed to work from the factory?

Got an Innova that seems to have aftermarket fog lights. I can turn them on no matter what the headlights or park lights are doing. I’ve heard some cars need at least the park lights on for the fogs to work. So what’s the deal with stock fog lights? Do they work on their own, or do they need the headlights or park lights on too? Also, I sometimes forget and leave them on all day… worried they might overheat or something.

My fog lights can be turned on or off, but only when the headlights are on, and they automatically turn off when I switch to high beams.

Is there any reason why fog lights and high beams would need to be on at the same time?

@Rio
Not really. If you need fog lights at night, using high beams would just make it worse for visibility.

Do your fog lights work with the park lights, or only with low beams? I’m thinking of rewiring mine to only work when the park lights are on, but not sure if that would affect how the fog lights perform.

@Rio
Honestly, I don’t know if mine work with the park lights. I leave the switch on auto and forget about it. I do know they don’t come on with the daytime running lights.

Depends on the local laws, but that sounds aftermarket. Where I’m from, fog lights only work with park lights or low beams and turn off with high beams.

Mine has a separate switch for fog lights, just on or off. They only turn on with low beams and stay off when daytime running lights are on.

@Clancy
I don’t have daytime running lights, just park lights. Should I wire mine to turn on when park lights are on, or should it be both park lights and low beams?

Factory fog lights work with low beams and sometimes with just the park lights, but never with high beams. Does your fog light switch look stock or is it a separate button on the dash?

Mine’s a separate button on the dash. It doesn’t work when the car is off, but my headlights do even if the car’s off.

Fog lights shouldn’t turn on if low beams are off.

So they’re meant to work independently of the headlights? Mine can be switched on no matter what lights are on.

Sorry, I edited my comment.
