How bad is this cam tower leak really?

Sorry about the blurry photo—didn’t realize it came out like that when I snapped it. This is on the passenger side of a 2016 Tundra with over 200k miles. The seller wants $11.5k. Should I go for it or walk away?

Honestly doesn’t look worse than my ‘07 with 135k. I’ve got leaks on both sides, but nothing major beyond that.

That looks more like a valve cover leak to me. Cam tower leaks usually show up at the back—you’d need a mirror or check underneath to be sure.

What’s the best way to tell the difference? I thought cam tower seals could be seen from that angle—CarCareNut even said to inspect it from this side.

@Cody
Good question. The valve cover gasket sits on top of the cam cradle, but cam tower leaks happen underneath it, and the oil runs down the backside. Try using a mirror behind that corner—you might see both are leaking. It’s not uncommon.

Looks like it just got a free fluid film treatment lol.

Hey! Quit taking pics of my truck, ya weirdo!

It doesn’t look that bad you can try one of these and see if it helps any. Since a cam tower reseal is a pretty involved process. Seems like a good candidate for these products. I’ve been using the stp high mileage for years in all my vehicles. Comes with rubber swelling agents. Perfectly safe. It’s not like some of those cooling system stop leak crap that can ruin an engine. The ap 205 is safe too

Oh nevermind—I just read the post again and realized it’s not your truck. You might wanna grab a flashlight and take a closer look. Doesn’t look like it’s leaking that bad now that I zoomed in.

I think $11.5k is a bit high. I bought an ‘08 4x4 5.7L with only 118k miles about a month ago for $12.5k. Came with brand new Falkens, Fuel wheels, and a hard tri-fold tonneau. It’s just an SR5 but has a bench seat with column shifter—exactly what I wanted. For me, the small tech and styling updates from 2nd to 2.5 gen weren’t worth paying more.
