I drive a 2020 hybrid and live in Kentucky, where we get some winter weather every year. I’m getting close to 100k miles and am starting to worry about dealing with a big repair bill. Does anyone here know if Cablegate is common in places like mine?
I’m wondering the same thing. I live in Vancouver, Canada, where we use a bit of road salt in the winter, but not too much. I have a 2020 model, and I’m concerned about whether I need to take any precautions here.
@Hollis
In the FB group I used to admin, we saw Cablegate issues in BC quite often.

Thanks so much! I had no idea there was a forum for this issue. Honestly, part of me wants it to fail just before the extended warranty expires so I can get another 10 years out of it. Also, the radio test is great to know. It gives early warning, and Toyota seems to pay attention to it. Really appreciate this info!
@Hollis
Yes, you definitely need to worry about it.

Thanks so much for the thorough response! I really appreciate it.
I just got my 2019 XLE Premium back from the dealership after a week-long repair for the cable issue. I live in New England and was driving on a cold night when I started seeing warning lights like ‘PKSB Malfunction’ and ‘Hybrid System Malfunction.’ After I got to the gym, more errors popped up on my dash and screen. The dealership found that the cable was indeed the problem, and luckily, my mileage was just under the 200k mark, so it was covered!
I’ve been involved with Cablegate since February 2022 and have seen all kinds of cases. It’s not just a Canadian issue—Europe has it too. I expect the problem to start affecting parts of the US soon, especially areas that see harsh weather.
Sorry to break the bad news, but every step of this issue I expected to happen, has happened. Toyota’s recall didn’t affect as many cars as it should have. In Canada, a Toyota rep said they’re expecting over $40 million in payouts for repairs. And that’s just for the 2019-2022 models. The issue is likely bigger in the US, especially considering how many more units are on the road. I’ve even seen some owners deny the issue, claiming Toyota’s reliability is still top-notch, but once you inspect the car, you see corrosion or worse.
I’m curious to know if anyone in southern California has experienced the Cablegate issue with their 2019 or newer RAV4s.

I honestly think Southern California is a safer area for avoiding the cable corrosion issue.
@Merrill
I do drive to the Sierras for skiing a couple of times a year. Do you think it might be a good idea to install CableWarden just in case?
