How do I fix code P2420 on my 2010 RAV4... any advice?

Hey everyone, I’m dealing with a P2420 code on my 2010 Toyota RAV4 and I’m not sure where to start. I also got a C1201 code popping up. Does anyone know how to fix these or where I should look first? Would really appreciate the help!

That P2420 code is usually related to the charcoal canister. I think it means there’s an issue with the evap system.

Evap system? Sorry, not super familiar with this. What exactly does that mean?

No worries! It’s part of the emissions system. Basically, it prevents gas vapors from escaping into the air. The charcoal canister is a key part of it.

FYI, the updated part number for the canister is 77740-0R010. You might need that if you’re replacing it.

For the C1201 code, I think it’s linked to the P2420. Once you fix the first one, the C1201 should clear up too.

Good to know! So it’s like a domino effect? Fix the canister and the other stuff falls into place?

Exactly. The ABS/VSC system shuts off when the check engine light comes on, but it resets after you clear the main issue.

If you’re not DIY-ing, any shop should be able to handle this. They’ll probably charge for an hour of labor.

Thanks! Any idea how much that usually costs?

Depends on the shop, but most charge around $90 to $130 an hour. Call around to compare prices.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can DIY it. Just get the part and look up a tutorial online.

I might try that. Do you think it’s hard to replace the canister myself?

It’s not the worst, but you’ll need some tools and patience. Definitely doable if you’re handy with cars.

Had the same issue on my Camry. Fixing the canister solved everything for me. Good luck!

That’s reassuring, thanks! Did you notice any other symptoms before fixing it?

Not really, just the check engine light and the ABS/VSC warning. No drivability issues though.
