Hey everyone, I got a new key for my 2001 Toyota Camry. It’s already cut and fits the ignition, but I need to program it. Bought it off Amazon. Anyone know what I need to do?
Yeah, you’ll need a dealer-level scan tool for that. 2001 Camrys have an immobilizer system, so the key won’t work without programming.

Dealer-level scan tool? Is that the same as a regular code reader?
@Alden
Nope, not the same. Regular code readers can’t program keys. Dealer tools are way more advanced and can cost $1k+.
@Alden
Yeah, those tools also let you access extra modules in the car, not just basic codes.
If you don’t have the scan tool, you can go to a shop or call a mobile locksmith. They’ll do it for you.

Any idea how much that costs?

Usually about an hour of labor. Could be $90 to $130 depending on the shop.
FYI, without programming, the car will crank but won’t start. It’s the immobilizer system blocking it.
I just had this done for my car. Mobile locksmiths are super convenient if you don’t wanna tow it to a shop.
Does anyone know if there’s a DIY way to do this? Like a sequence of turning the key or something?

Unfortunately, not for this car. It’s gotta be done with a proper scan tool.

Yeah, no shortcuts here. The system is designed to prevent unprogrammed keys from working.
