How long can a 2015 Prius C keep going

The Prius C does have an EGR, but it doesn’t have the same clogging issues most 3rd gen Prius models are known for. Not saying you shouldn’t clean it, but it’s not as urgent.

I did mine at around 170k miles, and it was pretty clean inside. I wouldn’t bother unless you’re already taking things apart.

I have a 2012 C (One). Does mine have an EGR? I’ve heard it doesn’t, so why does the 2015 C have one?

@Nuri
Yeah, you do have an EGR, but it’s not really something you need to worry about cleaning. The C uses an updated version of the older 2nd gen Prius engine, and the EGR isn’t prone to issues.

I also have a 2015 C. I change the oil every 10k miles as recommended and haven’t had to spend on anything unexpected. Just the usual stuff like brakes and tyres.

According to my car, about 32% of my miles are EV, so the engine itself has only done around 6,800 miles on fully synthetic oil.

@Flippa
Still, I’d go for 5,000-mile oil changes just to be safe.

Yeah, I agree. I once pushed one of my Prius cars to 10k intervals, and it ended up burning oil. Now I stick to 5k intervals with my other cars, and they’re running perfectly.

@Fox
My 2015 is at 320k miles now. I usually change the oil every 13k since I bought it at 58k (it was an ex-rental car). Never had oil loss issues, and lab reports say it’s fine to go even longer, but 13k is where I draw the line. I only use Mobil 1 ‘High Mileage Advanced Fuel Economy’ with OEM filters.

I guess it depends on how you drive. My cars get oil changes at 10k+ intervals and have over 250k miles with no major issues or oil consumption.

@FrankRich2
Wow, that’s impressive! Any major repairs so far? Water pump, IPM, traction battery?

@Fox
Changing the oil and topping it up are two different things. Even if you change it every 3-5k miles, you still need to keep an eye on it. If the engine is burning that much oil, the new oil you’re adding might keep it fresher longer. But yeah, if it’s bone dry at 10k, something’s wrong.

@Fin
Totally. My first car was a 1979 K5 Blazer with regular oil changes every 3k, but it burned oil constantly. My first Gen 3 Prius had 10k intervals, and I didn’t check the oil as often as I should have. One day, during a sharp turn, the warning light came on because of low oil pressure. Toyota said it was within spec, but I wasn’t comfortable with it.

I traded that one for a 2015 and now stick to 5k intervals while checking regularly. Haven’t had any oil burning issues since. I think it might have been a break-in problem with that first car.

My last Prius made it to 300k with no problems at all, just routine maintenance and oil changes every 5k.

But what’s the point of using fully synthetic oil if you’re going to change it every 3,400 miles of actual engine use?

@Flippa
The maintenance light comes on every 5k, so I just follow that. Better safe than sorry.

Actually, the 5k light is for tyre rotation. The oil change light comes on at 10k.

Don’t forget about changing the coolant, inverter coolant, spark plugs, and transmission fluid. Those can make a big difference too.
