How much does it cost to insure a Prius?

I’m trying to figure out the total cost of owning a Prius. I noticed that the insurance for a Prius seems higher than my Honda, and the repair costs are also higher. Can anyone share their insurance or repair numbers for comparison?

It depends on the year of the car, where you live, how many miles it has, and your driving history.

You could just visit an insurance company’s website and get a quote there.

What kind of estimate did the insurance company give you?

Here’s a breakdown of our 6-month premiums with Progressive:

1991 Honda Accord: $268
1999 Honda Civic: $199
2007 Honda Civic: $496
2011 Toyota Sienna: $348
2010 Toyota Prius: $480

This is really helpful, thanks a lot!

Sorry if this sounds silly, but is that just liability or more comprehensive coverage?

@Zadie
It’s liability only. I only paid $300 for the car, so it didn’t make sense to get full coverage.

Insurance costs can vary so much. It depends on things like where you live, how old you are, your driving history, your credit score, and who else is in your household. Different companies also weigh these factors differently.

There’s no universal answer to how much insurance for a Prius costs. The best way is to look at the quotes you’ve gotten and compare them with the gas savings from switching to the Prius. The same goes for repair costs—they’ll depend on the car’s year, condition, and your local rates. Without knowing the year and model of your Prius, it’s hard to give a clear estimate.

What’s funny is my insurance for a 2005 Scion tC is actually higher than the insurance for my 2010 Prius. My 2014 Subaru Outback, though, costs much more since I keep full coverage on that one.

Interesting, thanks for sharing your experience.

Honestly, no one here can give you a definite answer. Too many variables are involved.

I live in Canada and pay $350 a month, but my coworker only pays $60. It’s all about your driving record and location. Just call an insurance company—they’ll give you the exact numbers.
