ICS malfunction popping up again after 4 months

Hey all, 4 months ago my 2018 Camry XSE showed the ICS malfunction code. I took it to the shop and they said it was caused by a bad spark plug, so I ended up paying $600 for a tune-up and got all the spark plugs replaced. Fast forward to today, I’m just sitting at a red light, and boom, ICS code pops up again! It’s been 4 months since the last time. Has anyone else had this happen and found out it was something other than the spark plugs? Feeling pretty bummed out about this whole situation with my Camry.

That’s really odd… ICS doesn’t have anything to do with the engine. It stands for Intelligent Clearance Sonar, not something related to spark plugs. I remember there was a technical bulletin about ICS back in 2019, maybe they didn’t apply that update? Or it could be an issue with the sensors, a faulty module, or even just a fuse.

Yeah, I’m starting to think the car’s computer just goes haywire whenever it detects any kind of misfire.

When I got into the car this morning, a bunch of codes were going off all at once. A friend at work has a code reader and said it’s a misfire in the 3rd cylinder.

Did you ever figure out what was causing it? I’m getting the ICS malfunction too, along with a check engine light. When I checked with an OBD2 scanner, it pulled up a P0037 code, which is about the O2 sensor heater circuit being low.

@Bradas
Not yet. I had my dad, who’s a retired mechanic, check it and he said it was still showing a misfire in the 3rd cylinder. He reset the code and it stayed off for over a week, but now it’s back. I haven’t had time to take it to the dealer, so I’ve just been driving around with the warning lights flashing. Planning to get it looked at next week.

@Cael
Sounds like we’re dealing with different issues then, mine seems to be related to the O2 sensor. Maybe try changing the ignition coil on the misfiring cylinder? It might help.
