Is the 2022 Tundra Reliable or Should I Stick with a 4Runner?

I currently have a 2017 Tacoma Off-Road, which I got after selling my ‘14 4Runner SR5 because we moved to a farm and needed a truck bed. Now we’ve got our first baby on the way, and after putting the car seat in, I realized the backseat space is pretty tight.

So I’m stuck between going back to a 5th Gen 4Runner or getting a 3rd Gen Tundra. The 4Runner is rock solid and proven, but the Tundra has all the modern tech and power, which is hard to ignore. Prices in my area (BC) for a 2019-2020 4Runner and a 2022 Tundra are pretty close, so I’m wondering if anyone here has made a similar switch and how it’s worked out.

There’s a 2022 Tundra CrewMax Sport with 110,000 km that I’m considering. It would cost me about $10,000 CAD to upgrade from my Tacoma.

Is this a good move, or should I tough it out with the Tacoma until I can afford something newer? I’ve heard mixed things about the reliability of the 2022 models, which makes me hesitant.

I’ve got a 2022 Tundra, and it’s been solid for me. That said, it’s part of the recall, and I’m not pretending that’s not a big deal. If the one you’re looking at has 110,000 km and is about to get a full crate engine replacement, that could actually be a win.

If they swap in a 2025 engine and you get it for a good price, it might be worth it.

From what I understand, the engine was replaced, but I need to find out if it was just the small block or the full crate replacement.

The dealer told me that even if a truck only got a small block replacement, it would still be in line for a full engine swap later. I’d check with them directly and get it in writing. Hope the deal works out for you!

I’m in BC too and looking to upgrade my 2012, but I’m trying to find a 2021 (last year of the Gen 2) with low mileage.

I just trust them more—proven reliability, no question marks.

Yeah, it’s a tough choice! I don’t love the look of the 2nd Gen, but I know they’re rock solid.

You already know about the engine issues and replacements, but the bigger problem is that nobody really knows how these twin-turbo V6 engines will hold up long-term.

There have been reports of LS500 engines (same family) failing since 2019, but since those cars don’t sell in high numbers and usually don’t rack up crazy mileage, it’s not widely discussed.

If I were you, I’d wait until we start seeing 300k+ mile Tundras running strong, or just go with a V8 F-150 instead.

I’m selling my 2022… interested?
