Is this car deal okay or should I pass…?

The car has 72,000 miles on it. I want something dependable for under $18,000 that will keep going strong for at least eight years. What do you all think?

If you have $18,000 to spend, I’d look at Gen 4 instead. Gen 3 has a lot of problems with head gaskets.

Yeah totally agree

Feels overpriced to me

You could get two 2010s for that and still have enough left for gas for a year.

Not worth it. Better to spend just a bit more and get something newer.

If you want good advice here, include these things:

If you’re buying

  • Your budget
  • How far you drive daily
  • How many years you plan to keep the car
  • Try to get a mechanic to check it before buying

Check out the forum list of usual Prius problems

Run the Dr. Prius app to check the battery:

If you’re selling

  • The car’s year and model
  • What you want for it
  • Any problems
  • Why you’re selling it

I bought a 2015 back in 2021 for the same price. So yeah, this feels too high.

No way. You’ll probably need to change the hybrid battery soon, and maybe tires too.
That’s around $3,000 if you’re lucky.
Other than that, the car will probably keep running a long time.

Way too expensive. Try checking Facebook Marketplace. You skip all those dealer add-ons that way.

Asking way too much

That’s too much. I paid $10,000 for a 2013 last year with 87k miles. Paint was a little rough but no dents. Wouldn’t go over $10k for this one.

Don’t go through a dealer. Try OfferUp or Craigslist. You’ll get a better price.

I’d rather spend that 18k on a more solid Toyota. Gen 3 Prius engines are known to have head gasket failures. You’re looking at $3k to $5k for repairs. Toyota messed up with that one.

Try finding a private seller with clear service records. Way cheaper and you could get a Gen 4 around the same mileage.

It takes a bit more time but it’s totally worth it

Go for a 2016 or newer if you can. That’s when the newer hybrid system came out.

Too pricey. I’ve seen 2019s around that price range.

My son just got a 2015 for $12k.

No. I’ve seen a 2016 with fewer miles for less money.
