Just found out my 20-inch chrome-finished alloy wheels on the Limited trim are plastic? What’s up with this?

I was getting new tires put on my 2022 Hybrid Limited when the shop’s cone tool got stuck in the wheel. They’re taking responsibility and buying a new wheel, but I can’t believe these so-called 20-inch chrome-finished alloy wheels are made of plastic! I might have been better off with the XLE or another trim that has real alloy wheels.

Has anyone else experienced this? Maybe on the bright side, I can just replace the plastic to fix the curb rash? Trying to find some positives in this situation.

These Chromtec wheels are pretty much universally disliked for this reason.

They’re plastic covers glued on.

I can’t believe they promote this as a feature of the Limited trim.

Plus, the bigger wheels cost more. I really dislike how larger wheels are standard on higher trims. Just give me the smaller basic ones.

I swapped mine with wheels from a 2020 Lincoln Aviator. They look great. Just needed hubcentric spacers and different lug nuts. The bolt pattern and offset match.

They’re designed for weight savings and fuel economy. The base is aluminum with a plastic cap glued on top. They’re actually very expensive too. Sadly, they can’t be repaired. You either live with cosmetic damage or buy a new wheel every time something happens. With alloy wheels, you can fix and refinish them. Look into getting XSE alloy wheels—that’s what the top trims in Europe have, no Chromtec nonsense.
