Key fob battery is dead, how do I start my car?

My key fob battery finally died today… and of course, it happened while I was out. I used the emergency key to get into the car, but then I had no idea how to start it since it’s a push-to-start system.

I searched online for answers, but I couldn’t figure out where to place the key fob to get the car running.

Eventually, I held the fob right up against the start button, and somehow, it had just enough power left to start the car.

Problem is… my spare key is dead too :man_facepalming:

I’ll go grab new batteries tomorrow, but does anyone know if there’s an easier way to start the car when this happens?

Check the owner’s manual. For my car, the instructions are in the emergency section. You might find a spot where the fob needs to be placed to start the car without battery power.

If you get a new key fob battery, you can put the spare one in sleep mode. That’s what I did so the backup battery lasts longer.

Yeah, I do that too. Otherwise, the battery drains fast, and you’ll need a new one in less than a year.

It’s a good idea to keep a pack of CR2032 batteries at home. Buying them in bulk is cheaper, and you’ll always have one ready when this happens. Changing the battery is pretty simple once you know how to open the key fob.

In most cases, you just have to hold the key fob directly against the start button while pressing it.

Yep, that’s exactly how it works. The key fob has an RFID chip inside, and there’s a reader behind the start button to detect it even when the battery is dead.

Your car probably has instructions for this on the dashboard screen or in the manual. It’s a pretty common issue.

Press the key fob right against the ignition button and hold it there. The closer it is, the better the car will detect it.

This is literally explained in the manual. Might be a good time to read it!
