Lost Toyota Start+ Keyfob – Is Replacement the Only Option?

Good morning everyone! My girlfriend recently bought a used 2016 Toyota Rav4 (from a non-Toyota dealership). She decided to install a car starter and called a Toyota dealership for a quote. They told her it would be $950 plus labor (and didn’t provide a labor cost).

After a bit of digging, we realized the car already has the Toyota Start+ system installed, and both keys can start the car from a short distance. However, she wasn’t given the long-distance 2-way keyfob that’s supposed to come with the system. The dealership she bought it from didn’t even know about the keyfob. Now, the Toyota dealership is saying they can’t just replace the fob and would need to install a new system at full price. Is this really the only option? Can’t I just get a new fob for the existing system?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You should try going to another dealership for a second opinion. They might have a different solution.

She can also try starting the car using the Toyota app, if it’s available for her model.

Not on a 2016 RAV4. The app feature wasn’t available on that year.
