Thinking about getting a MK5 Supra but I keep seeing posts about oil consumption problems. Just wanted to clear up a couple of things…
Does this issue happen with both the 2.0 and 3.0 engines, or is it just one of them?
Besides the engine, what are the main differences between the two? Do they look the same from the outside, or is it mostly just the engine and interior that set them apart?
The oil burning issue mostly affected some 2021 models. Other years don’t really have the problem, so it’s not something that should stop you from getting one.
As for differences, the 3.0 has an electronic limited-slip diff, adaptive suspension, better brakes, and bigger forged wheels. The B58 engine in the 3.0 is a beast—it sounds great, has tons of tuning potential, and can make serious power without crazy mods. The 2.0 B48 is solid, but it’s not on the same level. If performance matters, go for the 3.0. If you just like how the car looks and don’t care much about power, the 2.0 might be a good way to save money… or honestly, you might as well get a GR86 and put the extra cash into mods.
@AloisSpewer
The B48 is starting to show its potential though. It has forged internals and a closed deck like the B58, and tuners are already getting numbers that can beat a stock B58.
I have a 3.0 Supra and love it for the power and reliability, but the B48 can get to stock B58 power levels with just bolt-ons and a tune. If you go further with bigger upgrades, it can easily break 500whp. It’s a pretty capable engine. As a Honda fan, I really wanted an Integra Type R with a K20C, but I have to admit the B48 is stronger.
@ToyotaTalker
Yeah, I don’t mean to knock the B48—it’s definitely a great engine. I just think if you’re planning to mod, starting with a 3.0 saves you money in the long run. You get more power out of the box and don’t have to push the engine as hard to get big numbers.
I don’t know much about issues with the 2.0, but for the 3.0, oil burning seems to only be a thing on 2021+ models. This might be because of the 6-port head they switched to after 2020. My 2020 3.0 hasn’t had any problems, and from what I’ve read, other 2020 owners say the same.
Other differences? The 2.0 has less power, different wheels, and I think the seats are different too. If you can afford it, the 3.0 is the better buy, but it’s your money at the end of the day!
A lot of people don’t read the BMW manuals… BMW actually says it’s normal for the B58 (and similar engines) to burn about a liter of oil every 1500 miles. So unless it’s worse than that, it’s not really out of the ordinary.
