My '08 Camry is bulletproof...but got a P0712 code and check engine light

Just completed a 20+ hour round trip from Georgia to Norfolk-Va Beach, and the car handled great. I was weaving in and out of traffic to avoid people blocking the left lanes, and even reached 115mph (allegedly :sweat_smile:). Honestly, I couldn’t believe how well the car handled, even at high speeds. Felt super stable and safe the whole time. However, on my way back home, the check engine light came on, and a P0712 code showed up. After scanning the car, I got back on the interstate and the car was running just fine at high speeds again, even though the code appeared. If you take care of these Camrys, they’re the real deal in my opinion.

Drop the pan, change the filter and fluid as soon as you can.

For sure.

How urgently should I take care of this since it’s my first time experiencing this code?

How long have you owned this car? Is the maintenance up to date? What are the miles?

@Masitsa
Yeah, the maintenance is all up to date. I’ve had it since January 12, 2020.

I’d recommend getting it checked out soon. If it has under 200k miles, it might be worth fixing, depending on the issue. Good luck!

@Masitsa
Way ahead of ya lol.

Low or bad transmission fluid is what caused issues with my parents’ 07 Corolla. It still runs, but there’s a constant check engine light, and the fluid looks burnt. Keep the fluid clean and full, and you should get 350k miles easily. I’d take care of it ASAP.

@Cade
I hear you, and I’ve been on top of this car’s maintenance, with my family’s help, since I got it in 2020. I’ve been dealing with a lot this year, including losing my mother in January, so I didn’t give the transmission care the attention it needed. The last time I had the fluid flushed was July 2020, just a few months after I bought it used.
So, should a fluid change fix the code? I also noticed some black residue mixed with the fluid when I checked the dipstick.
