Anyone here running the OTT tune with a manual? Thinking about it but not sure if there’s any real benefit since I control the shifts anyway. What do you guys think?
It helps with throttle response.

The tune changes how the throttle responds. Basically, when you press the gas, the power comes instantly instead of a slight delay.
@Tsuna
That actually sounds useful. I went with the V6 over the newer 4-cylinder for reliability, so any extra power I can squeeze out would be nice. Thanks!

If you’re mainly looking for better throttle response, you might get the same effect with a Pedal Commander. I have the OTT on my auto, and it’s great, but mostly because it improves the shift points. The throttle response is nice, but you can get that for half the price with a used Pedal Commander. Just my opinion!
@Vick
Appreciate it! I’ll check that out.

Pedal Commander and a tune aren’t the same thing though. One doesn’t replace the other.
This question keeps coming up, but we never seem to get a straight answer. Maybe today’s the day!

Yeah, I looked around and mostly found a YouTube video where the guy just says, ‘It feels good’ but doesn’t explain much.
@Caden
That’s kind of how it is.
I can’t really compare since I have a supercharger with the tune, but I do notice a difference between my Tacoma (2017) and my wife’s 4Runner (2020). The throttle response is definitely better.
I have a manual with the OTT tune, and honestly, I wouldn’t do it again. At first, it felt like an improvement, but after a month, I barely noticed it anymore. The throttle is more sensitive, which made it feel quicker at first, but my brain just got used to it. It’s like driving a car with touchy brakes—after a while, it feels normal.
The biggest issue is at low speeds with light throttle. Sometimes the engine lurches like it’s unsure whether to add gas or not. When it finally does, it jerks forward. At first, I thought it was me, but I can make it happen consistently.
The best part was disabling the seatbelt chime. That alone was worth it, but I could’ve done that for free.
I should’ve realized this before buying—the tune mainly fixes shift points for autos. I hoped it would improve fuel mapping or something, but I never really had an issue with that. And with a manual, I already control the shifts.
If you want real power, a tune won’t magically fix that. I did 5.29 gears, which helped off-road and made acceleration better, but that comes with trade-offs too. Thinking about adding a supercharger, but that’s a whole other level of cost.
I doubt it’s worth it, but maybe check Tacoma forums.

Yeah, but you’ll need 4-lo and lockers to get in.

Haha, yeah right. I haven’t even needed my lockers once yet!

Oh, I thought he meant the sub we’re in, so I was joking. Thanks for the link!
I went with Coyoza for my manual. Happy with it so far.
You know how when you hit the gas, it feels like the truck is ‘thinking about it’ before actually moving?
And how once you hit 2600 RPMs, the pedal barely does anything until it slowly creeps up to 3500?
Or when you really want to go, but pressing the gas doesn’t give you much?
Yeah, I don’t have those problems anymore. It all changed the day I paid a guy who looked like Shaggy from Scooby-Doo to install the OTT tune. I was skeptical at first, but now my truck actually responds when I press the gas. Feels way better to drive.
