Just got a surprise call from the dealer—apparently my 2022 Tundra is getting a full engine replacement due to a recall. Didn’t see that one coming. They said I’d get a rental for about 3 weeks while it’s being done. Truck only has 44k miles on it, so I’m a little torn. Is this a blessing in disguise or something I should be worried about? Curious what you all think.
How are you surprised? This has been floating around for ages. Honestly, 3 weeks sounds long—mine’s booked for end of the month and they told me 3 days. It’s a win, though. Brand new engine and you dodge the risk of a blow-up later. I’d take that trade any day.
From what I’ve read, it’s actually good news. They’ve pinpointed your truck as one of the ones with the potential issue. You’re getting ahead of a major failure and walking away with a new engine. Can’t beat that.
A zero-mile engine for free? Sounds like a win to me.

Yeah, I guess it does sound like a plus… just wasn’t expecting this kind of thing from Toyota.

Toyota’s got their rep for a reason. They’d rather swap the engine and keep customers loyal than have bad press down the line.
Why are you surprised, though? The issue’s been out in the open for a while now.
Are all the ‘22 and ‘23s affected, or only some batches?

Just the gas models, not hybrids. But yeah, basically all of them are on the list.
Mine just got done—took less than a week. Dealer gave me a higher-trim Tundra as a loaner. Now I’m tempted to upgrade to a Platinum… lol. New engine and turbos were the upside. Downside is now I want something I don’t really need.
@Tarian
That’s not an accident. Giving you a higher trim as a rental is classic sales tactic 101.

Yeah I figured… still sucks that I’m falling for it like everyone else lol.
@Tarian
At least you’re self-aware! Enjoy your ride—sounds like it’ll be solid once the new motor’s in.
Most dealerships are getting these engine swaps done in under a week. I’d ask why yours needs three.

Yeah, they probably just said 3 weeks to cover delays. My WRX had a similar thing—Subaru said 3 days and they wrapped it in 1. Got a free rental for basically nothing lol.
Man, 44k on the clock and you get a new engine? Sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me. Wish I could get that kind of refresh on some of my cars.
Our ‘22 is getting the swap too. Dealer said two days max.
Put some miles on that engine while you can. You don’t have to bring it in the second they call. Might as well squeeze out a bit more life.
Had mine done here in Denver. Took 3 days start to finish. Free rental, no hassle. Smoothest recall experience I’ve ever had.
Honestly, I’d push it back if I were you. I’d run the current engine a little longer—put another 50-60k on it before turning it in. No need to rush.
