I would like to have the reverse camera displayed on my aftermarket radio. Does anyone know which two of the multifunction display’s video wires—I’m assuming there are two—are? Or is there a better way to locate it? Pin 2, or the red wire, is the 12 volt reverse trigger.
Hey comrades,
that certain wiring colors can change based on the vehicle and camera model. For exact instructions specific to your setup, always refer to the camera’s handbook or speak with a qualified installer1. Please don’t hesitate to ask for more help or if you require any additional inquiries!
Back when I was installing an aftermarket radio in my car, I faced a similar challenge trying to connect the reverse camera. After fumbling through wiring diagrams and trial and error, I learned that locating the correct video wires can be tricky. Typically, there are two wires for the video feed—positive and negative—often found in the multifunction display harness. I found it easiest to use a multimeter to trace the wires, starting with the 12V reverse trigger (like your Pin 2 red wire) to identify when the camera is powered. Once that’s done, carefully test the other wires until you get the video signal. It’s crucial to proceed cautiously to avoid damaging the display or camera.
Your vehicle more than likely supplies power to the reverse light via a canbus module (or something similar) They are usually set to send 10.5V to the reversing lights, which will not trigger a reverse signal on your head unit, nor will it power your back up cam. My bimmer had the same issue and the solution was to add a relay.(google reverse cam relay) Another option is increasing your reverse light’s voltage via coding, but I wouldn’t bother.
About the wiring work, trust me I more often than not go a similar route, BUT you should use shrink wrap with glue. That thing is a blessing. I feel much safer using it, especially when I know I can set my car on fire if something goes wrong. The electrical tape should be a temporary solution.
