Have you cleaned out the EGR system before?

@Thorn
Only cleaned the EGR pipe and where it connects. It wasn’t too bad. I posted about it here when I bought the car — it was one of the first things I worked on. I haven’t cleaned the cooler or the intake though. Do you think I should do it now or just wait another 20k km?

@Nye
I’d do it sooner. The cooler, valve, and intake passages are all pretty important. The cooler is the hardest part. I usually seal one end and fill it with some strong Oxi Clean solution. It’s mild but works. If you want stronger, lye is great but you need to be careful — it’s strong stuff. Only use that on the cooler since it’s stainless steel.

Yeah, especially if you’re in the US — getting lye has become tricky. Oven cleaner usually has some in it, but not a lot. If you need more, sometimes soap making stores still sell lye. Worth asking around if you’re doing this kind of work.

@Nye
I’ve heard fuel in Europe is better than in the US. Might be why your car runs cleaner.

Honestly I thought Toyotas stopped showing numbers after 300,000

Looks great… I had to say goodbye to my 2010 Gen 3 because of the usual problems

This one surprised me. I thought I overpaid at first because of the high mileage. But turns out it had a lot of work done — new head gasket, piston rings, underbody coated, interior parts replaced, new water pump… and more. It’s kind of a mix between trim 3 and 4 — the first owner added stuff through the dealer.

I have a 2014 Gen 3. I get about 49 mpg — and I can push it higher with careful driving

I still see loads of Gen 3s driving around Vienna. I’m also lucky to have a hybrid battery repair guy just one village away.

Looks great

Mine is a 2nd gen too. At 258,000 miles and still getting 44 to 56 mpg

Are those original headlights? They look a bit different

If they’re the ones with 3 little ellipses, then yes — mine look the same and they came straight from the factory
