Should I buy a used rental Yaris… What should I watch out for?

Looking to buy a 2014 Toyota Yaris L Hatchback Coupe 2D on this forum and the person who posted this said they’ve been renting it out like a car version of Airbnb. Is that a bad sign or a good one? What should I check to avoid getting a bad deal?

My car was a rental. I love it. I bought it at 30k miles from Enterprise and now it has 240k miles with no problems.

I bet it’s Turo. People drive hard on rental cars so I would avoid it unless it’s a really good deal with a solid car.

Do the regular checks before buying second-hand. There’s a lot of information about that.

For Yaris, it’s the same engine from 06-18 so it’s proven, and if there’s no rust underneath and around, it’s a good choice for a commuter. Always better to check the one you’re looking for.

It’s a Yaris. They don’t drive it too hard, even as a rental. It has a very reliable engine. I bought my 2013 Yaris LE 4D Automatic used at 75k miles. It had some issues before, had a crash that was fixed with a lot of overspray, and the interior wasn’t in great condition. But mechanically, it’s very reliable and keeps running. If something needs to be replaced, the costs are low. If you need a simple, reliable car to get from point A to point B, I would get it. What’s the asking price?

@Oakes
The asking price is a firm $6500. It has 130k miles.

The L was a $16k Canadian car brand new. That’s like no more than 13k USD. $6500 sounds very high to me, about twice what I’d consider (though I get the used market is tough lately).

Mine was a rental. I bought it in 2017 for $9500 from Hertz with 29k miles. If you’re looking for a good deal, check them out. Check the service records for the car and look at the car fax. How many miles are on it?

@Zander
130k miles

Get the service records and if they look good, it seems fine to me. How much do they want for it?

Turo is probably what he’s talking about. Check the service records and make sure nothing was recommended to be fixed at the last oil change or service. These cars don’t have major issues until around 100k miles, but it’s something you want to look into before buying.

Maybe…

Hire a mechanic to do a thorough inspection of everything and see if it’s okay.

My 2016 used to be a rental. The only thing I don’t like is that it has basic features. I would have paid more for extra things like an armrest or trunk cover, or the SE model if I could have found one.

Just replace the regular maintenance items when you get it, unless you can verify with receipts that they’ve been done recently. Oil, filters, spark plugs, transmission fluid if the miles are getting high (I changed mine around 90k miles, I got it at 30k). That kind of stuff. I love my little rental Yaris!

I used to have a 2014 and loved it. It was a rental from a good company. $6500 also sounds really high for 130k miles and 10 years. I agree, you should really inspect it or try to lower the price a lot.
