I got rear-ended a couple of days ago and just received these images today. In my opinion, the car should be totaled, but State Farm is choosing to repair it instead. It’s a 2023 Camry LE with only 9K miles. Initially, the repair estimate was $10K, but now that insurance is involved, the quote has mysteriously dropped to $7K.
Why do you think it should be totaled? Insurance companies love totaling cars if it’s in their best interest, so if they think it can be fixed properly, they’ll do it.
You might also want to cross-post this to r/askmechanics for more input.
@Brown
Doesn’t it look like too much damage?
Not really. It looks like the trunk pan got pushed in. A few pulls and some new panels, and it’ll be good as new for way less than the cost of replacing the car.
Most states require repair costs to hit around 80% of the car’s value before they total it.
@Davis
Yeah, man, this is basically a new car. They’re gonna fix it. I had $8K worth of hail damage on my ‘23 Nightshade, and they made it look perfect again.
Nah, not too much damage. A semi backed into my parents’ 2007 Mercedes GL450 a few years ago and wrecked the whole rear. The driver took off, so no insurance from them, but my parents’ insurance still covered it even though the car was 16 years old and barely worth $10K.
My Camry had about the same amount of damage last June. Insurance covered $7K in repairs, and now it looks and drives like new. That was with Allstate, but I don’t think any company would handle it much differently.
@Shinji
I got a similar quote from State Farm.
Repairs like this are usually around $10K. I’m picking mine up from the body shop on Tuesday.
This is such a pointless post. You know the insurance company is going to make the decision, not random people on the internet.

Sounds like you’re just salty for some reason. If the post annoys you so much, why are you even commenting?
@Mack
Because it clogs up the forum with useless debates. The insurance company has the final say. What’s the point in asking?

I don’t think the insurance company cares about your opinion or anyone else’s. If this post bothers you so much, you don’t have to comment on it.
@Mack
You don’t have to post about something that’s already being handled either. Just saying.

If you’re that annoyed, just report the post and move on. No need to act like a Karen about it.
@Mack
You’re the one acting like a child, crying over whether your car gets totaled or not.

You’re just proving how immature you are. Instead of telling me to be an adult, maybe try that yourself first. Probably still paying off your car while mine is fully owned at 19. Feels different when it’s your hard-earned money on the line.
@Mack
Dude, you need to relax. It’s just a car, and the insurance will handle it. No need to take it so personally.

Clearly, you care since you keep replying. Acting like a big crybaby over someone else’s car situation.
@Mack
You win, man. Hope your car gets totaled so you can get your Lexus. Have a good day.
