Has anyone successfully filed a claim with Toyota Corporate for a water leak repair? I currently have an open claim and am waiting for their response. I believe this issue is due to a manufacturing defect.
This is exactly why I prefer cars without sunroofs. My wife wants all the extras, but every time she mentions a sunroof, all I can think of is leaks like this.
We’ve had the same issue on both a 2019 Sienna and a 2006 Lexus GX470. Seems like Toyota has a long history of sunroof and drain problems.

Same issue on my 2005 Camry.

Honestly, over time, this happens to almost all sunroofs, no matter the brand. Had the same issue with a VW Passat—it was just clogged drains.
@Brandy
Yep, clogged drain lines seem to be the usual culprit.
Your sunroof drains are probably clogged. This is super common. Even spiders can block them by building nests inside. Mine leaked yesterday because it was frozen after some freezing rain.
Sunroof seals never fully seal 100%—that’s why they have gutters and drains. It’s kind of a band-aid solution for the design flaw of putting rubber seals on a moving part. The best thing you can do is keep the drains clear and check them regularly.
@Arley
Exactly! Every car with a sunroof eventually runs into this issue. Keeping the drains clean is key.
Check out YouTube for videos on clearing sunroof drain holes. I did it on my 2004 model and it worked great. Super easy fix.

Toyota told me it’s not just clogged drains—the whole sunroof assembly is defective.
@Sterling
Had a similar issue with my old Ford Focus. Dealer told me the sunroof needed replacing, but I cleared out the drain holes myself with a pipe cleaner and the leak stopped.
Might be worth trying before committing to a full replacement!
I have a 2020 Sienna Limited with a dual sunroof and was quoted around $5,000 to fix a water leak. Has anyone had luck getting Toyota Corporate to cover this? Looking for any advice or similar experiences.
@Sterling
This is why an extended bumper-to-bumper warranty can be a lifesaver.
This thread has me nervous. I just got a new 2024 Sienna and, weirdly, it hasn’t rained in the five months I’ve had it (San Diego drought life). Maybe this upcoming week will be my first real test!
