I’ve always had Tacomas from 1993 until I wrecked my 2008 a few months ago. Wanted a change, so I bought a hybrid Honda CRV, which I’m happy with.
But I still need a truck for hauling lumber, dump runs, and towing my boat and camper. Since this will be my second vehicle, I’m not worried about gas or tight parking spots. So I’m looking at full-size trucks, thinking the Tundra’s V8 might tow better than the V6 in my Tacoma.
Are older Tundras as reliable as my Tacomas were? My budget is about $10k, and most Tundras in that range are early 2000s with nearly 200k miles.

If you can, go for a 2007-2013 Tundra with the lowest miles you can find.
What’s special about those years?
Those are 2nd generation Tundras with the 5.7L V8 and 6-speed transmission, which is what you’re looking for. They’re in your price range and known for being dependable.
Look for a 2nd Gen 5.7L V8 from 2010-2013 if you can. The earlier ones had some issues and can be rusted out. The 5.7L is a very solid engine, not perfect, but pretty close. It’s just slightly less durable than the 4.7L before it. You can check online for the best years for 2nd Gen Tundras to get a better idea. In general, 2nd Gen Tundras are almost as reliable as Tacomas.
