Hey everyone, I’m going to test drive a manual Supra MK5 soon. Anything I should pay extra attention to? Any common issues or things that might catch me off guard?
Check if you’re comfortable with the visibility and how tight the cabin feels. Also, the shift from first to second can feel weird. Some say removing the delay valve fixes it, but if you’re not planning on modding, it’s worth noting.
@Yani
Yeah, the delay valve removal makes a huge difference. I had a shop do it in an hour, and it was night and day.
@Yani
Good to know, thanks!
Is it brand new? Has the engine been broken in? I have a 2024 3.0L manual and I love it. If you’re used to Honda manuals, this one won’t feel as smooth or clicky. But compared to BMW’s manual, I’d say the Supra shifts better. Try driving with and without rev matching—some like it, some don’t. The interior space might feel smaller than you expect, but you get used to it. It’s a real sports car feel. The suspension also gives decent feedback, which surprised me. One thing, though… don’t expect much from the sound system.
@Tristan
Yeah, it’s a new one. I’m still deciding on the color. I like White Metallic, but Copper Grey is nice too. Too many grey cars out there, though. I would’ve gone for yellow if it was available!
If it’s a 2021, ask if it’s had any oil consumption issues. Also, test the stereo with different kinds of music—it’s not great. Drive with the windows down so you can hear the wind buffeting. It’s fixable, but you should know what you’re dealing with. If it’s manual, really pay attention to that first-to-second shift. If it’s auto, make sure it shifts cleanly through all gears. Try out all the electronics too—gauge cluster, touchscreen, everything.
Make sure you test it on a variety of roads, not just smooth highways.
Try a quick 1st to 2nd shift above 5K RPM and see if it grinds. Also, notice how long the clutch takes to disengage after you press it.

Good tip, I’ll check that. Thanks!
I don’t really get why people want a manual for a high-horsepower car… unless you’re keeping it stock. Don’t get me wrong, I love manuals, but they have limits. If you want a raw, engaging driving experience, go for a Miata or S2000. But a 400hp+ car? The ZF8 auto shifts way faster than any human could. If you want a Supra just for fun, sure, manual makes sense. But if you’re looking for the fastest performance possible, I don’t see why you’d pick a manual over the auto.
